Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused Narendra Modi of using demonetisation for money laundering so that the cash could be spent in elections to purchase votes.
The attack came a day after Modi’s jibe that the Prime Minister’s post was “not up for auction” and could not be bought with money amassed from deposit scams.
Addressing rallies at Serampore in Hooghly and Krishnagar in Nadia on Wednesday, the Bengal chief minister said Modi was “destined” to be ousted in this election and the next government at the Centre would probe demonetisation.
“You (Modi) are destined to be dethroned after these elections. Our government (at the Centre) will prove what a big scam demonetisation was,” said Mamata.
“Modibabu, you may force demonetisation on people to get black money converted to white to be able to spend it during elections and buy votes…. But mark my words, you can never purchase the electorate in Bengal. Here, it’s a different ballgame,” she added.
The remarks came a day after the Prime Minister’s auction swipe. “Didi, you cannot buy the post of Prime Minister in an auction with money from chit funds.... Didi is dreaming of becoming Prime Minister. If such a situation arises, there will be an auction between Trinamul and the Congress for the post,” Modi had said in Asansol on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Mamata said Modi had gone “from being a chaiwala (tea-seller) to a chowkidar (watchman) and then a chowkidar who is a chor (thief)”.
“The nation doesn’t want such leaders. After the elections, when they are thrown out of power, everything will come to light, one by one,” said the Trinamul chief, who has countered all major statements made at rallies by Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.
Accusing Modi and Shah of not knowing how to speak with respect about women, Mamata said they were smuggling “guns and goons” into Bengal to influence the elections.
“The BJP is importing guns and goons into Bengal to vitiate the election and unleash terror…. We must foil every such attempt.”
The chief minister urged the people to defeat Modi, noting that every vote was important. “The Prime Minister lies so much. He should have respect for the post of Prime Minister…. The BJP and its party’s Prime Minister have no work…. Every vote is important to defeat Narendra Modi.”
