Mamata Banerjee on Friday wooed Murshidabad’s Behrampore, one of the traditional bases of the Congress in Bengal, and urged voters to back Trinamul.

“Please do not vote the Congress or the Left. It will only help the BJP. You should vote for our party this time as we are the strongest political force in the state. We want our candidates to emerge as winners in all 42 seats of Bengal so that we can take a leading role in forming the new government in Delhi with other regional parties,” the chief minister said.

During past week, Mamata has been focusing on Murshidabad district, which has three Lok Sabha seats — Murshidabad, Behrampore and Jangipur.

So far, the Trinamul chief has held five meetings in the district, including in Behrampore from where Congress veteran Adhir Chowdhury is in the fray.

On Friday, Mamata tried to drive home the point that support for the Congress or the Left would divide anti-BJP votes. “We do not want the anti-BJP votes to split. Whoever is strong in a state should be allowed to contest and win seats to defeat Narendra Modi and his party. That is why we have not thought of fielding candidates in Rajasthan or Kerala where the Congress is contesting in several seats. But in Bengal, only Trinamul, not the Congress, can defeat the BJP. That is why are asking for your votes,” Mamata said.

When she had kicked off her campaign on April 3 from north Bengal, the BJP was the target of Mamata’s attacks. However, as she reached traditional Congress hubs like North Dinajpur, Malda and Murshidabad, the party became her primary target.

“This is because she is apprehensive that the minority votes might get divided in these seats. She doesn’t want the BJP, which has been playing the polarisation card, to gain out of this division,” said a political analyst.

Earlier on Friday, the Trinamul chief held two rallies in support of Arpita Ghosh, her party’s candidate in the Balurghat seat.

At both meetings, she hit out at the BJP and the Prime Minister while asserting that her party will win the five seats in the state where elections have already been held in the first and second phase on April 11 and 18.

“The information I have indicates that we will win Darjeeling (seat) this time. We will also win in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Raiganj seats. The BJP will not be able to secure even two seats this time here like 2014,” Mamata said.

The BJP had won the Darjeeling and Asansol seats in 2015.

Mamata also spoke about Arpita and tried to quell discontent against her candidature. Many are unhappy with Arpita, who had won in 2014 but later faced allegations that she was not seen in her constituency regularly.
