The Mamata Banerjee government on Thursday asked all district magistrates to ensure that name of no genuine voter was deleted from the voters’ list during the electoral roll revision by the Election Commission of India.

The revision started on December 16 and is scheduled to continue till January 15.

Chief secretary Rajiva Sinha on Thursday called up all 22 district magistrates one by one and asked them to keep a strong vigil on the entire process. The instruction is considered to be significant in the backdrop of protests against the amended citizenship rule and the “threat” of an NRC-like exercise in the state.

“The government wants to ensure that no genuine voter is excluded from the revised voters’ list that will be published in February. There is already panic over the amended citizenship Act and the NRC-like exercise. If significant number of names are deleted from the voters’ list, it could create further panic,” said a senior government official.

The state is worried about deletion of names from the voters’ list as most omissions are based on complaints lodged by common citizens. “So, the authorities have to verify complaints and conduct proper hearing,” said another official.
