Trinamul chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Friday asked senior party leaders in Birbhum to hold district-level meetings every Sunday to fix political activities and warned leaders against any lack of coordination among members of the core committee she had formed to run the organisation.

Trinamul’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal is now in Delhi’s Tihar jail in the cattle-smuggling case.

“She was visibly annoyed with reports of lack of coordination among the leaders of the core committee that she had formed in January to run the party’s organisation. She directed all to work together and meet every Sunday to plan political activities. She directed to send a report on the weekly meeting of the party ensuring that she is the head of Birbhum in the absence of Anubrata,” said a Trinamul leader who was present at the meeting.

Mamata on Friday held a meeting with around 350 party leaders, including presidents of gram panchayats, to assess the party’s situation in the runup to the rural polls scheduled to be held within two months.

Apart from Mamata, the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, senior leaders like Frihad Hakim, Arup Biswas and Malay Ghatak were present.

“Why are the core committee members not meeting regularly? I don’t want any division among the leaders of our party. Everyone has to work together. I am looking after the party’s state of affairs in Birbhum,” a leader quoted Mamata as saying at the meeting held at her Kalighat office on Friday afternoon.

“She personally interacted with the leaders, including juniors, to know the organisational status,” he added.

Mamata appointed three senior party leaders — urban development minister Firhad Hakim, law minister Malay Ghatak and party’s Pandaveswar MLA Narendranath Chakrabarty — to keep in touch with the Birbhum leaders and help them to decide on political programmes.

“She said at least one of these three leaders will be present in the weekly meeting in Birbhum. If these three leaders failed to solve any problem, the subject will be taken to the party’s state president Subrata Bakshi,” another leader said.

A source in the Trinamul said Mamata asked her party colleagues in Birbhum to take care of Anubrata’s daughter Sukanya as she was alone.
