Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee has convened a meeting of her party’s senior leaders in Calcutta on Friday, where she is likely to issue guidelines for panchayat election, said sources.

The meeting will be held at the chief minister’s residence in Kalighat, Calcutta. The sources said Trinamul national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other senior leaders like Subrata Bakshi, Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas and Chandrima Bhattacharya had already been asked to attend the meeting and also inform others who needed to be present about the session.

“It is likely to be something in the form of a core committee meeting, where she (Mamata) is expected to give the leadership the roadmap, the guidelines for the panchayat elections, which are likely to take place this summer,” said a Trinamul MP.

A senior south Bengal MLA said Mamata was likely to accept at the meeting the review report of the five-member committee headed by minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury, which had examined Trinamul’s “shock” defeat in the Assembly bypoll at Sagardighi and sought to assess the current state of the minority support base. Minorities form roughly a third of the Bengal electorate and over 65 per cent of that in Sagardighi.

On Friday, Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav is likely to call on Mamata. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister will be in Calcutta over the weekend to attend his party’s national executive.
