Chief minister Mamata Banerjee will conduct two Vijaya Sammilani events in her Assembly constituency of Bhowanipore in south Calcutta on Monday and Thursday.

The first event will be organised by her party while the second by the state government.

On Monday, the Trinamul Congress chairperson will attend a Vijaya event with leaders and workers from the eight Calcutta Municipal Corporation wards — 63, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 77 and 82 — that make up the constituency spread over a part of Chowringhee in the north to Kalighat in the south.

“It is a very cosmopolitan Assembly constituency that has sided with us since 2009 (after delimitation resurrected it). In the last bypoll there (October 2021), she (Mamata) won with a record margin and leads from every ward for the first time since 2014 (general election). The Vijaya Sammilani there is important politically,” said a senior member of the ruling party.

The event will take place at Uttirna, the open-air auditorium in Alipore. The party’s state president Subrata Bakshi and its south Calcutta unit chief Debasish Kumar have been tasked with organising the event.

“Bhowanipore is a socio-economically diverse constituency that has around 80 per cent non-Muslim votes,” a Trinamul MP said. “It is the chief minister’s seat. We do not take it lightly.”

The second event is being organised by Nabanna. Primarily meant for industrialists and members of the civil society besides MPs, MLAs and senior leaders of Trinamul, Thursday’s event will take place at the Alipore Museum. “That event too is important, especially in the run-up to BGBS,” said a minister.
