Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday confirmed her participation at a meeting of the National Ganga Council, likely to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on December 30, which would be their third meeting this month, after an offline one in Delhi on December 5 and an online one on December 9.

While Modi is the president of the council, the Bengal chief minister is the head of one of the five-member states — the others being Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand —through which the Ganga flows. Their previous meetings this month were regarding next year’s G20 summit to be hosted by India.

Mamata confirmed her participation during an administrative preparatory meeting at Nabanna (the state secretariat), for the Ganga Sagar Mela next month.

During the meeting, while speaking to the representatives of the Calcutta Port Trust, Mamata asked: “On the 30th, the Prime Minister is going to come. Are you going to conduct an event on a ship in Garden Reach?”

An official said that the event was likely to take place on the INS Netaji Subhas.

“Actually, I have been informed about that programme.... That is why I ask.... I too am supposed to attend the event, which I will. You can be sure of it,” Mamata said.

At the meeting, Mamata is likely to bring up the ongoing erosion by the river Ganga in Malda, Murshidabad and Nadia districts in Bengal.
