Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing chief minister Mamata Banerjee of spreading false information to create "public hysteria" over Aadhaar card deactivation for "political gains".

Adhikari's letter comes in response to Mamata's recent claim that Aadhaar cards were deactivated by the Centre.

Adhikari sent his letter a day to the PM a day after Mamata wrote to Modi raising the issue of deactivation of Aadhaar cards for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes in the state. Mamata raised suspicions about the timing, suggesting a BJP plot to disenfranchise people ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP has since then unequivocally stated that the Aadhaar card deactivation resulted from a technical glitch. Shantanu Thakur, the Union minister of state for ports, shipping, and waterways, assured that the deactivation process had been suspended, and the affected cards would be reinstated in the coming days.

"I have written a letter to the Hon'ble Prime Minister; Shri @narendramodi Ji apprising him about the malafide intention of Mamata Banerjee to create public hysteria for political gains," Adhikari posted on his official X handle.

"WB CM Mamata Banerjee has been intentionally and deliberately creating panic amongst the people of the state by peddling politically motivated FAKE NEWS that the Central Government is going to deactivate Aadhaar Cards before the Lok Sabha Elections," Adhikari wrote.

Adhikari also pointed out that Mamata's promise to issue an alternative identity card to replace Aadhaar was unauthorised interference in matters falling under the Union list outlined in the 7th Schedule of the Constitution.
