Mamata Banerjee is likely to meet a flock of Trinamul Congress office-bearers from Hooghly on April 20 in Calcutta apparently to understand the party's state of affairs in the district after the arrest of two of its leaders by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with alleged anomalies in teachers' recruitment.

"It would be her second meeting at the Kalighat office after she sat with Birbhum leaders on March 24. The meeting is deemed to be important amid reports of lapses in the organisation in Hooghly where the BJP has a significant presence. She may confer responsibilities on a few senior leaders of the district and can appoint a special observer for Hooghly," said a senior Trinamul leader in Hooghly.

The arrest of zilla parishad functionary Santanu Banerjee and secretary of Youth Trinamul Kuntal Ghosh by the ED had put the party on the back foot.

"Although the party expelled both the leaders, its recent programmes in the district, especially in the Arambagh subdivision, were adversely affected. We think Didi will come up with some remedies as she is aware of every development," said a senior leader.

According to sources, Trinamul might use seniors like Tapan Dasgupta and Dilip Yadav to look after the district unit.

Last month, the Mamata Banerjee government had appointed Trinamul leader Tapan Dasgupta as the chairperson of Furfura Sharif Development Authority in the district. Concentrating on Furfura Sharif is important for Trinamul as Nawsad Siddique, the ISF MLA of Bhangar, is a cleric of the Furfura Sharif.
