Author Mamata Banerjee is 101 not out.

The chief minister, who has been penning books since the mid-1990s, reached the century mark on the inaugural day of the 44th Calcutta International Book Fair with the unveiling of 13 new titles in Bengali, English and Urdu.

“Yes, you can call it a century,” Mamata told Metro. “Though I remain extremely tied up, I worked hard so that 13 new titles can be released this Book Fair.” With this, the number of titles released by Mamata touched 101.

Mamata’s brush with books began with the penning of Upalabdhi in 1995, which is still a bestseller.

This year Mamata has come up with an interesting mix — that includes titles like “Why We Are Saying No NRC, No CAA”, “Bengal Can”, “Bengal Heritage”, “Laho Pronam Chhoray, Chhoray”, Kobita Bitan (a collection of 946 poems) and Himmat.

While delivering the inaugural address at the fair, Mamata wondered whether there was a bigger place in India than Calcutta Book Fair, which she said upheld plurality of cultures, before harping on India’s unity in diversity.

“Somebody can publish a book in English, Hindi, Urdu, Lepcha… this is about uniqueness of cultures. This is unity in diversity. How will you differentiate?” she said.
