Anit Thapa, the president of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), the party that won the recent Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) Sabha polls, called on chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna on Wednesday.

He iterated his commitment to work with the state government, adding that “sentimental politics”, not “practical politics”, had been at play in the hills so far. Thapa accused Bimal Gurung, without naming him, of fighting with the state government when the latter was at the helm of the hill body.

Mamata is scheduled to visit the Darjeeling hills to mark the birth anniversary of Nepali poet Bhanubhakta Acharya, which falls on July 13, and oversee the revival of the GTA, elections to which were held after 10 years. The chief minister is likely to reach Darjeeling on July 11. On July 12, the first meeting of the GTA Sabha will be held in which its chairman and chief executive will be elected.

The BGPM and Trinamul were in an unannounced alliance during the GTA polls. Trinamul leader Aroop Biswas said the party would give the BGPM “support from outside” in the GTA.
