West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee during a press meet on Monday claimed that the no one offered money to the parents of the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at the state run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
“Money wasn’t offered to the family. They were told if you want to do some good work in the memory of your daughter then tell us. One has to prove if money was offered,” said Mamata.
On Friday, a controversy over the compensation took place when Trinamul leaders claimed in a press conference that the parents of the victim made false claims. The parents of the victim within hours iterated that they were offered money by DC North.
Mamata also spoke about the Durga Puja government honorarium controversy.
According to the Chief minister the Puja committees who have refused the government fund will be removed from the list and new Puja committees will be included.
Many Puja committees have refused the Rs 85,000 government honorarium in protests against the RG Kar rape-murder.
On the protests by the junior doctors and the public, Mamata said: “All protests took place without permission. It creates problems if you block roads….Supreme Court has also requested the doctors to rejoin work. I am also requesting them to join work. I welcome them if 5-10 representatives of them want to talk to us.”
Prior to Mamata’s appeal, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the West Bengal government, submitted a status report filed by the state health department.
“Twenty-three people have died as doctors are on strike," Sibal told the Chief Justice of India-led bench.
“Some are trying to malign RG Kar case…Return to the festivities.” Mamata said.
September 9 marks one month of the RG Kar rape-murder. Also, Bengal’s biggest festival, the Durga Puja is exactly a month away.
Mamata’s appeal came minutes later the Supreme Court directed the CBI to submit a fresh report by September 17 on the probe in the rape and murder case of a postgraduate medic at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
