Chief minister Mamata Banerjee's demand for Union home minister Amit Shah's resignation over his statement predicting the implosion of the Trinamul Congress government before "25" saw state BJP leaders fire back at the ruling party.

Two key leaders of the BJP in Bengal — state party chief Sukanta Majumdar and leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari — took turns to lash out at Mamata.

They both mocked the chief minister's Monday news conference by saying that the recurrent arrests of Trinamul leaders and lawmakers in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam unnerved her.

"Actually, the chief minister has lost her mind after her MLAs are getting arrested one by one. She is worried that when the details from the mobile phones of these arrested people will be recovered, fingers will be pointed at her family. This fear has gripped her and she is speaking incoherently," Majumdar said at a news conference in Pathar Pratima, South 24-Parganas.

During his address at Suri in Birbhum on Friday, Shah had urged the people of Bengal to help the BJP win 35 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Majumdar said what Shah had stated was that under the impact of such a huge win, the Mamata government would implode by 2025.

Mamata alleged that Shah's statement betrayed the intention of the BJP to disturb the elected government of Bengal and demanded his resignation.

Soon after Shah's meeting was over, six spokespersons for Trinamul issued individual video statements. While Mamata made a public appearance on the same day, she did not comment on Shah until Monday.

Defending Shah's claims, Majumdar said the Gandhinagar MP's words were strategically chosen.

"Last time (in 2019) Amit Shahji had said that the BJP would win 21 seats, and we ended up winning 18. We lost two to three seats by very thin margins. This means that when Amit Shahji says something, there is a lot of planning into it. Everything is planned. Just wait and watch," he added.

Speaking at a public meeting in Bankura, Adhikari echoed Majumdar. The Nandigram MLA said three Trinamul MLAs had been arrested so far in the alleged cash-for-jobs scam and many more would follow.

"She (Mamata) has lost her sleep," Adhikari said.

"Who is she? How dare she demand Amit Shahji's resignation? Does she think that the Union home minister, who was also the former chief of our party, needs to learn from her?" Adhikari asked.

He alleged that the chief minister was trying to fan NRC and CAA issues to polarise Muslim votes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls next year.

CPM's central committee member Sujan Chakraborty said it was true that people had lost faith in Trinamul and its days were numbered. "But the BJP is planning to divide the votes to help Trinamul. But they must be aware that people have realised that while Trinamul is a party of thieves, BJP's politics is that of polarisation. The people will vote none of them," he said
