Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday flagged many concerns that anger, irritate and sadden Calcuttans in their everyday life.
Metro lists some of the peeve points Mamata mentioned at during a meeting at Nabanna on Monday.
Garbage
The chief minister spoke about heaps of garbage on the roads and overflowing vats several times during the meeting.
Talking specifically about Howrah she said the vats were not cleaned. “Howrah has no conservancy system,” she said.
“The garbage of the roads is lying on the road. This is leading to an increased menace of mosquitoes and flies.”
Mamata asked some of the municipalities like Panihati, Chakdah, Aramnbagh, Tarakeswar, Darjeeling and Panskura to arrange for land for solid waste management immediately. “I want the solid waste management project to end by 2026.”
Water
The chief minister is not happy with water wastage. She spoke of open roadside taps.
She asked for an automated system that works on censors.
“The taps or pipe water keeps flowing,” she said. “Why are we not going into a system where water will flow only when there is a bucket or hand underneath?” she said.
Mamata also referred to the Puddapukur water treatment plant that was built in 1984. The pipelines that branch out from the plant have many leaks, she said, and that contaminates the water.
“Pipelines are being repaired but in many places, water is getting contaminated. Those who are interested in money should understand there is nothing more important than life...,” she said.
Roads
Mamata expressed concern about Calcutta’s roads.
The government spends crores of rupees on roadways, she said, but the roads are not maintained.
“The road-building company should take care of a road’s upkeep for five years. But are we blacklisting those who are not? They think it is government money. Let it go to waste. But that can no longer happen,” she said.
Referring to Salt Lake, she said the roads there were not cleaned. “Why are roads not swept? Ebar ki amake rasta jhar dite berote hobe? (Do I have to go and sweep the roads now)?” she said.
Street lights
Street lights are missing at several places, Mamata said. “No one cares.”
She wanted the hours fixed for street lights. “From 5.30pm to 5.30am. If lights are switched on beyond this time that particular department will get no money,” she said.
Short circuit
“Short-circuit” happens because no one bothers, the chief minister said.
Officials said Mamata was referring to electrocution.
People’s harassment
The chief minister said despite the government’s efforts to make all certificates available online, people were being harassed by the municipalities.
“The municipality is not working and the government is suffering face loss,” she said.
