Malda youth dies in hill biking trip in Kalimpong

The victim was riding pillion on his friend’s bike when their two-wheeler fell into a gorge beside river Teesta

A Malda youth died and his friend got injured in an accident in Kalimpong district on Saturday.

Sources said Sourav Saha,21, of Panchisha in Malda’s Manikchak, who was riding pillion on his friend Humayun Sagir’s bike, died when their two-wheeler fell into a gorge beside river Teesta.

Sourav last week left for a bike trip to the hills with friends Humayun, Ansarul Haque and Prabhakar Roy. They reached Siliguri last Wednesday. On Thursday, they ascended the hills via NH10 and went to Triveni in Kalimpong and on Friday visited Darjeeling.

On Saturday, they were descending via NH10 when Humayan lost control of the bike at a bend and the vehicle fell into the gorge. Humayan got stuck in a tree but Sourav crashed down. Ansarul, Prabhakar, bystanders and police eventually found the duo. Cops took them to a primary health centre where Sourav was declared dead.

Humayan was sent to Kalimpong district hospital. His father Nimne ai Chandra Saha said Sourav had to go to Pune to work right after his higher secondary. The youth was in Malda on a visit when he and his friends planned the bike trip to the hills.
