A homemaker in Malda was picked up by a youth and his family members while she was having a walk on Sunday morning, kept confined, beaten black and blue and then left at a deserted place after some hours.

The attack was organised because the victim’s daughter had rejected a proposal of marriage made by the youth. The daughter has filed a complaint at Englishbazar police station. The police are probing the case.

Sources said the woman, who is in her early fifties and resides at North Ramchandrapur under Englishbazar police station jurisdiction, was walking alone in the morning.

Suddenly, Biki Karmakar, the youth, and some of his family members intercepted her, said the victim’s daughter.

“They dragged my mother away to some place where they confined and beat her mercilessly. We were clueless as she went missing. After a couple of hours, we found her in a deserted place. She was bleeding and had serious injuries. We took her to Malda Medical College and Hospital where she is still under treatment,” said the daughter who studies in a local college.

She said about one-and-a-half years back, Karmakar had proposed to her and she had turned it down.

“My rejection had left him infuriated and later, he had verbally abused me a number of times. Things had gone to such an extent that locals had to arrange a meeting between our families so that he did not disturb me. Even then, he didn’t stop threatening me,” said the girl.

Her relatives are also worried after the attack and said Karmakar should be arrested.

“The girl goes to college and private tuitions alone. We are worried over her safety, especially after this incident. The youth’s desperation is evident from the attack that he organised on the girl’s mother,” said one of her relatives.

The police said they were in search of the accused. “Our officers will speak with the complainant and her mother to gather more details,” said a senior officer.
