A four-day-long under-14 national lawn tennis tournament commenced on the premises of the Malda Club on Monday.
Organised by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and the Bengal Tennis Association (BTA), around 60 players from Bengal, Karnataka, Assam, New Delhi, Sikkim and some other states are participating in the event. They will play in singles and doubles in the next few days.
Saikat Roy, an international tennis umpire with experience in conducting matches in Wimbledon and the US Open, and coaches of the BTA are present at the event.
“This is the first time that a lawn tennis tournament which is approved by the AITA and the BTA is held in north Bengal,” said Ashok Chitlangia, secretary of the 120-year-old club.
The final matches, he said, will be held on June 9.
