The renovation and beautification of the Malda Town station, which started a year ago under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat scheme, will be completed by December, senior officials of the Eastern Railway (ER) have said.
“Almost 75 per cent of the project has been completed. We hope to complete the project by December this year,” said Pankaj Kumar, the Gati Shakti engineer of the ER’s Malda railway division.
Gati Shakti is a scheme launched by the Narendra Modi government to augment the railway infrastructure and improve the speed of goods trains. Under the scheme, each railway division has been assigned a Gati Shakti engineer.
The railways set aside ₹45.5 crore for the revamp of the Malda Town station.
Sources said around 12,000 square metres of the area in and around the station
were brought under the project. “New elevators and escalators were installed. The illumination and flooring have been changed,” Kumar said.
Added to them, waiting halls were renovated with modern facilities. “The entrance and exits will be separate at the station and all six platforms will have similar conveniences,” said another railway official.
“This station is important in terms of the railways’ revenue generation. We believe the infrastructure improvement will augment the footfall here as passengers will get better amenities,” added the railway official.
