Police have registered a case and seized the vehicle. They are trying to find out who was driving the vehicle when the incident happened.

Sources said Pappu Das, 35, a resident of Bala-Sahapur under Malda police station, was returning home from Madhabnagar, with his wife Sima and their daughter on a two-wheeler.

At a sharp turn near Brindabani Grounds of the town where a night cricket match was in progress, the two-wheeler was hit by the SDO’s official vehicle.

As the news spread, residents rushed to the spot immediately. Krishnendu Choudhury, the chairman of Englishbazar municipality, also went to the spot.

The injured couple and the child were sent to Malda Medical College and Hospital. Pappu succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.

Sima, the deceased’ wife, said: “The person who was driving the vehicle didn’t even come down to help us. He is responsible for my husband’s death. I want justice.”

Choudhury, the civic chief, and some others who had been to the spot, said they had no inkling as to who was in the driver’s seat at that time.

A police team from Englishbazar police station also reached the site of the accident and seized the vehicle and the two-wheeler.

“A case has been registered. We have also asked for the CCTV footage of the area for examination. Our officers are gathering information and waiting for the post-mortem report. We will also record statements of all persons concerned and witnesses,” said Pradeep Kumar Yadav, the district police chief of Malda.

Rano, the SDO, however, could not be contacted. Calls made to him by this newspaper went unanswered.
