Police in Malda recovered a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition from the house of a Trinamool leader on Wednesday.
Abdus Salam, 35, a leader of the party's minority cell from whose house these items were found, was arrested.
Police sources said Salam was under the scanner for his alleged role in certain unlawful activities.
“On Wednesday, we raided his house at Puratan Pataldanga under Mothabari police station and recovered an automatic pistol, an improvised one-shutter gun and six live bullets. He was arrested and booked under the Arms Act,” said a senior police officer.
Salam, he said, was produced in court on Wednesday itself and sent in police custody for seven days.
The district TMC leadership was quick to distance itself from Salam.
"We do not support any unlawful activity. He will be expelled from the party soon,” said Tinku Rahaman Biswas, the district chief of Trinamool's minority cell.
