A joint team of the Malda cyber crime police and Uttar Pradesh police arrested a Nigerian national from Noida for allegedly being a part of a group that conned Rs 15 lakh from a Malda woman two years ago.

Accused Chibuzo Christiano was brought here and produced in a local court on Monday.

Sources said that in 2021, a woman from Malda’s Mothabari filed a complaint with the cyber crime police that a man she got to know on social media cheated her of Rs 15 lakh while promising to marry her.

Police started a probe and arrested Benedict, a Nigerian national, and Golu Singh, his aide, in Delhi last August.

“In the course of our investigations, we learnt another Nigerian was involved with them. They run a racket to cheat money under various pretexts,” said a police officer.

Hence, a police team was sent to UP where it contacted the local police and together nabbed Christiano a couple of days back. Police said they would quiz him on his aides.
