Two Malda MLAs, one each from the BJP and Trinamul, have been accused of assaulting a student and publicly threatening public servants, respectively.
Chinmay Deb Barman, the BJP MLA of Gazole, has been accused of thrashing a student who went to his place for a certificate. Chandana Sarkar, the Trinamul MLA of Baishnabnagar, publicly threatened a police officer and a civil servant with transfers to remote areas of the state within a month.
College student Rathin Tikadar on Sunday went to Barman to get his signature on a form and a residential certificate to apply for a scholarship, he said. “I was kept waiting for over an hour. The MLA was visibly angry. As I cited my requirements, the MLA suddenly turned hostile and abused me verbally. When I protested, the MLA grabbed me by the neck and assaulted me. I was asked to leave immediately,” Rathin, who filed a police complaint against the MLA, alleged.
Barman and the district BJP leadership denied the charges. “I did not assault anyone. I help people whenever they come to my residence,” said the MLA.
Ujjwal Dutta, the BJP president of Malda north organisational district, said: “This is a ploy against our party MLA who is known for his amiable nature. We have primarily learnt is that the college student raised a baseless allegation against him at the behest of the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad.”
District TMCP president Prasun Roy denied they sent anyone to the MLA’s quarters.
In the other case, Sarkar also Malda district youth Trinamul chief, reportedly lambasted the inspector-in-charge of Baishnabnagar police station Nim Shering Bhutia and BDO of Kaliachak–III block Mamun Akhtar at a public meeting on Sunday on her party’s foundation day.
Sources said the meeting was organised on a ground by the local panchayat samity.
When Sarkar reached the venue and found that Durgesh Sarkar, the sabhapati of panchayat samity and the block Trinamul president, was holding a separate meeting at the same location for the same event, she got angry. “She came to know that the BDO and police gave her and Durgesh permission to hold the meetings at the same venue. This made her furious,” said a source.
The Baishnabnagar MLA, while addressing party supporters, suddenly trained her guns at these two government officials. “The BDO seems to have sold himself to agents of BJP in Trinamul. I warn you to be cautious. Or else, hear from me that I can transfer both of you to remote areas within a month. I have that connection,” she said.
The government servants refrained from comments.
Chandana, contacted later, sounded unperturbed. “They made a mistake which made me angry. That is why I have warned them in public,” she said.
