Congress and Trinamul leaders from the family of Malda Congress patriarch A.B.A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury put “politics on rest” for Id prayers and feast on Monday.
Mausam Benazir Noor, the district Trinamul president, had lunch with cousin Isha Khan Chowdhury, a Congress MLA. Also present was her uncle Abu Hashem Khan Chowdhury, the Congress MP of Malda (South).
The family circle was complete with nine-year-old Ayman and six-year-old Amayra, the children of Mausam, who also joined the festival get-together.
As descendants of the Khan Chowdhury family, all had made their political debut with the Congress. Although Ghani Khan — popular as Barkatda — was fond of Mamata Banerjee, he remained in the Congress till his death in 2006. Trinamul never fielded any candidate against Barkatda as a mark of respect.
In January this year, Kotowali — the Khan Chowdhury home in Malda — suffered the biggest blow when Mausam joined Trinamul.
The family chasm widened when she contested from Malda North as the Trinamul candidate. The Congress fielded Isha against her.
Mausam is now district Trinamul president and Isha pitted against her party as a Congress MLA.
On Monday, though, politics took a back seat. “Let politics rest for the day and family follow rules set by Ghani Khan Choudhury, who taught how to embrace all despite differences,” Mausam said.
