Malda: 2 accidents, 1 death in past 24 hours

Also, Mashiur Rahaman, civic volunteer posted in Harishchandrapur police station of Malda district is missing for the past nine days

A person died and eight others were injured in two road accidents under Gazole police station limits of Malda in past 24 hours.

Around 10.45pm on Monday, an SUV with five occupants on the Gazole-Bamangola state highway rammed into a tree. Doctors at Gazole rural hospital declared Pranballav Mandal, 45, of Bamangola, dead. Police said some passengers were drunk.

A van toppled at Matoil on NH81 at 2am on Tuesday, injuring four coming to Chanchal after donating blood to a patient at the MMCH.

They are now in MMCH where two are critical.

Missing

Mashiur Rahaman, a civic volunteer posted in Harishchandrapur police station of Malda district is missing for the past nine days.

On June 5, Rahaman, along with his wife, had been to a relative’s place in Magura, a village under Pukhuria police station of the district.

“From there, he left for Malda to meet one of his friends who is under treatment at MMCH. He was supposed to return by evening. As he didn’t turn up, we called him and realised that his cell phone was off. Since then, we could not trace him,” said Ayesha Khatun, his wife.

Police officers said a missing diary has been lodged with them.

Bangladeshi arrested

Troops of the 15 battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) posted at the India-Bangladesh border in Jalpaiguri district have apprehended a Bangladeshi resident on Tuesday who was allegedly trying to illegally cross the border.

The person has been identified as Md Alam Sheikh, a resident of Cox’s Bazar district of the neighbouring country. He has been handed over to the police at Kotwali police station.

The BSF also carried out raids in different locations along the international border under the north Bengal frontier on Tuesday and seized a number of contraband items worth Rs 1.08 lakh, sources said.
