The next few days, including Mahalaya on Saturday, are set to be wet but the intensity of the showers will keep decreasing, the Alipore Met office has said.

The office recorded 30.5mm of rain over 24 hours till 8.30pm on Wednesday, compared with 67mm on Tuesday.

The city has received around 330mm of rain so far this month, well past the normal count of 318mm, according to Met office records.

“The cyclonic circulation that is triggering the current spell of rain has moved from Andhra Pradesh towards south Karnataka. The other rain-triggering factor, a strong monsoon current, is moving westward from coastal Bengal,” a Met department official said.

“The city is likely to receive rain at least till Saturday but the intensity is set to keep decreasing.”

The clouds and showers pulled the Celsius down drastically on Wednesday. The maximum temperature was 26.8 degrees, five notches below normal. Since March 1 (26.4 degrees), only one day has been cooler than Wednesday — August 17 (26.6 degrees), when the city was lashed by close to 90mm of rain.

Dhapa received 40mm of rain, Ultadanga and New Market 35mm each and Patuli 33mm, according to a weather-tracking website of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation.
