A court in Baruipur of South 24-Parganas extended the jail custody of ISF MLA Nawsad Siddique by two more weeks and rejected his bail petition, prompting him to accuse the state government of vendetta for pointing out its mistakes.
Speaking to the media, the Bhangar MLA said: “It is our duty to expose the flaws of the state government. But it is unfortunate if the state government reacts with vengeance.”
Siddique and 17 party activists were arrested on January 21 during a demonstration in Calcutta to demand the arrest of Trinamul leader Arabul Islam after a spate of clashes with ruling party supporters in Bhangar.
A Calcutta court rejected Siddique’s bail the same day and again on February 1. Then the court extended his custody till February 15, prompting the ISF to accuse Trinamul of conspiracy behind the MLA’s arrest.
On February 3, Siddique was produced before the ACJM court in Baruipur by Leather Complex police in connection with an alleged attack on police in Calcutta on January 21.
Siddique was produced in court on Thursday in connection with that case. The court ordered a two-week extension of his jail custody.
Siddique, before leaving the court premises, said: “They (state government) are making vague allegations against me.... Many people say so many things.... But it hardly matters and the people of Bengal are watching everything. I am fighting for the common people, which makes the state government afraid. But my fight will continue.”
Siddique also rejected speculations of his joining hands with the BJP when told that Trinamul leaders had been alleging that the ISF was the “B team” of the saffron party.
“They are telling false things about me.... it makes little difference,” he said.
Earlier, Siddique had alleged that his arrest had been planned “to prevent the erosion of Trinamul’s vote bank” in Bhangar.
