The Lok Sabha privileges committee issued summonses to the Bengal chief secretary, director general of police and three other officials based on a complaint filed by BJP Balurghat MP and state unit chief Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday.

According to a notice issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat, the committee called chief secretary B.P. Gopalika, DGP Rajeev Kumar, district magistrate of North 24-Parganas Sharad Kumar Dwivedi, Basirhat police chief Hossain Mehdi Rehman and Basirhat additional SP Partha Ghosh to appear before it on February 19.

The summonses come after Majumdar in a complaint to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accused state authorities of engaging in misconduct, brutality and inflicting life-threatening injuries upon him during his protest over the Sandeshkhali issue on Wednesday.

In his letter to the Speaker, Majumdar alleged that the police, instead of promptly offering him medical aid, postponed his transfer to the hospital over 20 minutes when he was unconscious.

He condemned this apparent indifference to human life and fundamental decency as profoundly troubling.

He said when he was finally sent to a hospital, the police deliberately chose a facility an hour away from the site.
