Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday told Trinamul Congress and BJP MPs from Bengal not to turn the House into the Bengal Assembly when the two sides shouted at each other over “cut money” and law and order in the state.

The Speaker has made the remark during Zero Hour after Sudip Bandyopadhyay of Trinamul urged the Chair to expunge from the records Hooghly BJP MP Locket Chatterjee’s allegations against Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee over the “cut money” issue.

During Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Locket had accused Mamata of being a beneficiary of the “cut money”.

Bandyopadhyay on Wednesday quoted Locket and said she had alleged that 75 per cent of the “cut money” went to the chief minister.

“Sir, if such a wild allegation is raised in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly against the Prime Minister and if it is not expunged, it will not look good,” Bandyopadhyay said.

“Our chief minister is honest and one of the best chief ministers in the country,” he added.

Birla assured Bandyopadhyay that he would go through the House proceedings and give a ruling.

The Trinamul legislator also urged the Speaker to expunge from the records references to the law and order in Bengal, claiming a state’s law and order couldn’t be discussed in the Lok Sabha. “If it is allowed, then law and order in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar should also be discussed on the floor of the House,” he said.

Even as Bandyopadhyay was speaking, some BJP MPs started shouting and accused Trinamul of rampant corruption. The situation turned worse when he finished the speech.

Some MPs of both the sides stood up and shouted at the top of their voices, pointing fingers to call the other corrupt. At this juncture, the Speaker said: “Don’t make this house the Bengal Assembly”.
