The Left Front and the Congress have finalised seat sharing for the 20-member Alipurduar municipality to which elections are due this summer.

This is the first time that the Left and the Congress have decided to contest the Alipurduar civic elections as allies.

“We have decided to contest the ensuing civic polls by forging an alliance with the Congress. The seat sharing is also finalised. We will contest in 13 seats and the Congress will get the rest of the seats,” Krishna Banerjee, the convener of the Alipurduar district Left Front, said at the district CPM office here on Sunday.

Shankar Malakar, the observer of the Congress in north Bengal, said: “We will soon finalise the names of the candidates for respective wards.”

In the 2013 civic polls, the Left had bagged eight seats, while six candidates each of the Congress and Trinamul emerged winners.

Although the Left Front formed the board, six Congress councillors later joined Trinamul which grabbed the board. Later, a couple of Left councillors also joined Trinamul.
