The land for the Dakshineshwar Kali temple was bought on this day by Rani Rashmoni. Her husband had died with an unfulfilled wish to build a Kali temple. Rani Rashmoni herself was inspired to build the temple by a dream when she was just about to start on a pilgrimage.
In the deed of endowment, Rani Rashmoni declared that in order to fulfil her husband’s wish, on September 6, 1847, she purchased 54.4 bighas of land at the cost of ₹42,500 from James Hasty, to build a pucca Navaratna temple, 12 Shiva temples (Jyotirlingam), a Vishnu temple and a Natmandir on the land.
On May 31, 1855, she placed a Luxminarayan Shila in the Navaratna temple in accordance with the wish of her late husband and also for the welfare of his soul, said the deed. It was executed on May 31, 1855.
