Brajendranath Seal, a renowned scholar of philosophy and many other branches of learning, both of science and humanities, was born on this day.

His best-known work, The Positive Sciences of the Ancient Hindus, is a work on the history of science and looks at ancient Indian philosophical ideas.

After obtaining his degrees from Calcutta University, he taught at several colleges and then at Calcutta University. He held the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta.

A Memoir on the Co-efficient of Numbers and Comparative Studies in Vaishnavism and Christianity are among the other books written by him.
