Yesterdate: This day from Kolkata’s past, September 28, 1799

Astvatsator Muradghanian, who contributed in a major way towards the setting up of the Armenian College in Calcutta, passed away on this day in the city

Astvatsator Muradghanian, who contributed in a major way towards the setting up of the Armenian College in Calcutta, passed away on this day in the city. He was buried at the Armenian Church of Nazareth, Calcutta. He was born in New Julfa in Iran, according to the website of the Armenian College, a school for the community.

He migrated to India and settled down in Calcutta. He became a very successful businessman and donated the generous amount of 8,000 in his will to start a school
for the community in Calcutta.

Several others from the community, such as Arathoon Kaloos and Mnatsakan Vardanian, helped to set up the Armenian College and Philanthropic Academy in 1821. It is located on Free School Street.
