Educator, social reformer and lawyer Ananda Mohan Bose, who set up several institutions, was born on this day. A close associate of Surendranath Banerjea, he was a co-founder with Banerjea of Indian Association, one of the first Indian political organisations. Later, Bose was a senior leader of Indian National Congress.

After studying at Presidency College, Bose went to Cambridge University where he became the first Indian Wrangler, a student who earned first-class in the Mathematical Tripos. Then he studied law in Britain and was called to the bar in 1874.

He was a co-founder of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj, which was established after Bose and a few others, such as Shibnath Shastri and Umesh Chandra Dutta had a difference of opinion with Keshab Chandra Sen. Bose also established the City College in Calcutta.

Bose had also founded Chhatrasamaj, the student’s organisation of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. He had raised his voice in protest against the Vernacular Press Act. The speech that he made on October 16, 1905, against the Partition of Bengal, was memorable. He passed away in the following year.

He was married to Swarnaprabha Devi, sister of scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose.
