On this day, John Paxton Norman, who was the acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, was stabbed when he was coming down the steps of Town Hall
in Calcutta. He died the next day.
He was stabbed by a person called Abdulla, believed to be a Wahabi.
Norman was unpopular for giving harsh judgments.
At his trial, Abdulla seemed to speak in riddles, saying: “Earth is sunk below the water, and the men have gone up to the sky; the dog is eating the wall.”
No connection could be established between the murder and the Wahabis. Abdulla was sentenced to death and hanged.
