Nandan, the film and cultural centre in Calcutta and one of the city’s most popular destinations, was inaugurated on this day by filmmaker Satyajit Ray, who also designed the logo of the complex.

The foundation stone of Nandan was laid in 1980 by then chief minister Jyoti Basu.

Nandan is the main venue of Kolkata International Film Festival. Its theatres have hosted the best of the world and the Indian cinema, but it has also courted controversy for refusing to screen a few films.

It has often been a site for art and poetry events, as well as protests.

Many writers and artists are regulars on the Nandan premises. Another former chief minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, would often spend the evenings at Nandan.
