On this day a cyclone formed at about 250km south-east of Calcutta and eventually hit Bangladesh. Very heavy rainfall along with severe storm caused the death of more than 100 people. The cyclone, which lasted till September 21, rendered a million people homeless.

Another cyclone had hit Bangladesh on exactly the same dates, September 19-21, 1839. The cyclone had passed north after crossing Sundarbans between Calcutta and Barisal, writes F. Henderson in Disastrous storms in the Bay of Bengal.
