On this day, Bauddha Dharmankur Sabha was established in the city by Buddhist monk Kripasaran Mahathavir.
The organisation aimed to revive Buddhist culture and religious practices.
The organisation began to function from an office in Lalitamohan Das Lane, Buddhist Temple Street now, near Bow Barracks.
The Dharmankur Vihara, or temple, was established there in 1903.
Kripasaran Mahathavir established several branches of the organisation in different parts of India.
His efforts led to the establishment of the department of Pali at Calcutta University in 1907, the website of the organisation says.
Bauddha Dharmankur Sabha established a school for children in 1967 and a free medical centre in 1990. It publishes a journal titled Jagajjyoti.
