On this day, Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo declared at the Assembly of Greater East Asiatic Nations, in Tokyo, that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands would be handed over to the Provisional Government of Azad Hind, formed by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The Provisional Government thus acquired its first territory in India. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands were renamed Shaheed and Swarajya respectively.

On December 30, 1943, Bose would hoist the Indian flag in Andaman.

By that time, the Japanese had reportedly committed a series of brutalities on the residents of the islands, and they would continue to do so, till they surrendered the territory in 1945.
