On this day, Elijah Impey, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Bengal, introduced the first set of articles of the Civil Procedure Code that he had put together.
Governor-General Warren Hastings had proposed that Impey be requested to accept the charge of the office of the Sadar Diwani Adalat. Impey accepted the offer and introduced the reforms.
Thirteen articles were introduced on November 3, 1780, and a revised regulation of 95 articles was released on July 5, 1781. This was called the first effort to codify Civil Procedure laws in British India. A Persian translation by William Chambers was published in 1781 and a Bengali translation by Jonathan Duncan in 1783.
