The building of the Holy Rosary Cathedral was completed on this day. Also known as the Portuguese church or Murgihata church, it is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta and is located in Burrabazar.
It was originally built as a chapel by the Portuguese settlers in this area of Calcutta. The Portuguese used to raise fowl, hence the name Murgihata, murgi being the Bengali word for hens or chicken. The expense to build the church was ₹90,000, of which a large part was borne by individuals from the Portuguese community.
One of the major attractions of the church is the display of the 14 stations of the Cross.
