Officer in Bengal Civil Service Steuart Bayley was born on this day. He joined the service in 1856.
He became commissioner of the Patna division in 1873. He was appointed chief commissioner of Assam in 1878. In 1881, he was appointed resident of Hyderabad.
Between 1887 and 1890, he was Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. In 1888, he was part of the Sikkim expedition, the British army mission to free Sikkim from Tibetan forces.
