Governor-General Lord Auckland wrote his minute on education on this day.

This followed the previous Governor-General Lord Bentinck’s Act on education that had endorsed and implemented the recommendations of Thomas Babington Macaulay on a new education policy, which would introduce western education to Indians at the expense of Indian systems of knowledge, languages and literatures.

Lord Auckland tried to correct the bias of the Act and attempted a more balanced education policy that would provide for the English institutions, but would also provide for traditional Oriental institutions. The minute gave effect to this.
