The office premises of the newspaper Bande Mataram, located at 2/1 Creek Row, were searched on this day.

The newspaper, which earned the wrath of colonial authorities for being a strident voice of nationalism, was edited by Aurobindo Ghosh. A body warrant was issued but was not executed. The newspaper carried reports of the raid the next day.

Ghosh was charged with sedition as editor of Bande Mataram in August under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code. He was arrested on August 16, 1907, from the office of Bande Mataram, and released on bail the next day. On September 23, 1907, he was acquitted as the prosecution failed to prove that he was the editor.

Bipin Chandra Pal had started the paper with Ghosh’s help.

After Pal left, Ghosh had become the editor, though there was no official evidence.
