On this day, the Mohun Bagan football team beat the British team East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 to win the Indian Football Association (IFA) shield. This was the first time an all-Indian team had defeated a British team to win the IFA shield. The victory was of special significance in the context of the Independence movement. A few months later, the capital of India would be shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.

The IFA tournament had started in 1893 and had been dominated by British teams. In the 1911 final match at the Calcutta Football Club grounds, East Yorkshire Regiment scored the first goal. Mohun Bagan captain Shibdas Bhaduri scored the equaliser and Abhilash Ghosh scored the winner for Mohun Bagan. The players, most of whom played barefoot, were treated as heroes and victory celebrations continued for long. The invitations to the team to celebratory events were so many that most were refused.
