Baptist missionary Joshua Marshman, one of the Serampore trio with William Carey and William Ward, passed away on this day. He had arrived in Serampore from England in October 1799, where he lived a life of great hardship. A scholar like Carey, he, with Carey, translated the Bible into Indian languages and translated many classical Indian texts into English. He studied Chinese later and wrote Elements of Chinese Grammar.
Carey, Ward and Marshman had established the Serampore Mission Press. Marshman played a crucial role in starting Samachar Darpan, a Bengali newspaper published by the mission press. Marshman also played a crucial role in establishing Serampore College.
