The exhibition presented a massive range of handcrafted goods and is said to have shaped arts and crafts education in colonial India. The Maharajah of Scindia contributed the Gwalior Gateway, which was a carved sandstone structure, and eventually, it was sent to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The Maidan was connected by a bridge to the Indian Museum side. The exhibition was formally opened by Viceroy Lord Ripon. The government of Bengal was allowed to select and keep the articles from the various provinces.

More than 10,000,00 people visited the exhibition.
