Hara Chandra Ghosh, a Derozian who became a distinguished judge, passed away on this day.
He belonged to Young Bengal, a group of young men who were followers of the radical thinker Derozio. Ghosh caught the eye of Governor-General Lord Bentinck, who wanted to appoint him on the personal staff of the Governor-General, an offer Ghosh could not take up. Later, he was appointed munsif (judge) in Bankura, where he proved his efficiency immediately. He rose in the judiciary and became the junior police magistrate in Calcutta and was later transferred to the Small Causes Court, where his bust was installed after his death.
He was involved in the setting up of Bethune School and was the legal guardian of Kaliprasanna Singha, one of the most eminent names in the 19th century intellectual world of Bengal.
