On this day, a group of revolutionaries from Bengal and Punjab, led by Rash Behari Bose, attempted to assassinate Lord Hardinge, the Viceroy of India, in Delhi.

A homemade bomb was hurled at Lord Hardinge and his wife, Lady Hardinge, when they were making their way through Chandni Chowk on elephant back. The Viceroy was injured, and Lady Hardinge, the mahout and elephant were untouched. But the servant riding behind Lord Hardinge died.

Basu escaped arrest, but five other persons were convicted.

Four were hanged and one was sentenced to life imprisonment. Basu would become involved with the Ghadar movement and then go to Japan.
