A Brahmo leader, nationalist and poet Ananda Chandra Mitra passed away on this date. He taught in Mymensingh for several years and worked for the Calcutta municipality in his later life. He came under the influence of Shivanath Shashtri and belonged to the secret group with Bipin Chandra Pal and Sundari Mohan Das.
Appearing between the ages marked by Michael Madhusudan Dutta and Rabindranath Tagore, he wrote in the epic tradition.
His works include Mitrakavya, Helenakavya and Bharatmangal. His poetry is imprinted with his nationalist ideas. He wrote songs in classical and local traditions and also wrote for children. He was a strong critic of child marriage and wrote a satire against it.
