Calcutta Gazette reported on this day the appearance of an actress on the Calcutta stage. The theatre, then restricted to Europeans, usually featured men impersonating women on stage. An actress was a novelty. The report in Calcutta Gazette commented on “the novel appearance of a lady whose condescension to grace the Calcutta stage would alone entitle her to lasting remembrance”. It added that her portrayal of the most “captivating character of Celia” has endeared her forever to the audience that had watched her. The report did not mention who the actress was.
